October kicks off at Mina de São Domingos with another Utopian Workshop! Under the guidance of the artist Daniela Reis, we challenge all participants to "imagine the future" through painting and drawing under photography and transparencies.
There is always an idea of what a place could be like if there were no restrictions on imagination. We always have a less conventional fantasy about how a space could be inhabited if we were given all the freedom to think about it. This is how the impossible workshops of MALACATE come about - if the power of transformation was all in the people, and there were no budget limits, what would those places look like? What alternatives do we imagine for the ruins, the bridges, the covered areas?
This utopian workshop will take place near the ruins of the Mina de S. Domingos mining complex, in the area known as Achada do Gamo.
It is here that, under the guidance of the artist Daniela Reis, we propose to create a material record based on the immateriality of memory, desire, abstraction and the evocation of distant realities.
To produce an artistic object that registers a desire for the Future, an escape from melancholy through "making work".
Thus, based on texts by several authors (António Tabucchi, Italo Calvino, Elis Regina, Clarice Lispector...) and visual examples (Hundertwasser, Anselm Kiefer, Ola fur Eliasson, Swoon...), the construction of an idealised landscape will be proposed, with the use of transparencies, photographs and other plastic materials.
A landscape made of interiors that will overlap and embrace the scenery offered by Mina de São Domingos.
Drawing and painting, in a logic of sketching and rapid registration, will be the techniques
used.
