In the impossible workshops at MALACATE, the local community and visitors come together in order to imagine how different places in Mina de S. Domingos could be.
ABOUT UTOPIC WORKSHOPS
There is always an idea of what a place can be like if there is no restraint on the imagination. We always have a less conventional fantasy about how a space could be inhabited if we were given free rein to think about it.

The regeneration of a place is done first by dreaming it, imagining it without restrictions and sharing ideas with someone from outside, comparing proposals, crossing eyes and sketching out solutions. What would the village's main square look like if it could change shape or color? How would the ruins be modified if they wanted to make a playground? And if the great lake at the mine cut wasn't acidic, would it be possible to design a river?
These and many other questions that question the place and put forward hypotheses for its transformation, in an exercise in imagination without limits and with the support of an artistic eye, is what we propose to take to the community in these workshops.
Here, the aim is above all to create common ground between the place and the imagination of its inhabitants and its visitors. It will seek to turn the community into more than passive spectators, involving it in an action of imagination and reflection using a guest artist and also the ambassador of the activity.
In these one-day workshops, group work will be conducted in a workshop format for sharing ideas about the possibilities of occupying public space.
Thus, it is not an event of traditional art and community, but a comprehensive initiative to create contemporary perspectives based on an idea of constant dialectic between the echoes of the past and the possibilities of the future.
